Created in response to the incredible work the NHS has done during COVID-19, Hearten goes some way to thank the many NHS staff for their bravery and dedication by creating a virtual gallery and then a physical gallery exhibition later in the year at the Trust. Lydia Julien
Friday 27 April 2018
Conversations With Art is a series started by Tim Cousins at APT Studios (for South London Art Map last Fridays) in which an invited artist brings one artwork to discuss for 45 minutes. During the series I have had conversations with Lydia Julien, Tisna Westerhoff, Marcelle Hanselaar, Susan Sluglett, Guler Ates, Kaori Homma, Almuth Tebbenhoff, Sheila Vollmer. I discussed my own project and film "I Wish" with film maker Irina Nedelcu in 2015.

Pulpit and Martyr's Pulpit
Pulpit was made in response to drawings I made of ornate Georgian pulpits along The Strand. There had been a fashion for designing very high pulpits with elaborate staircases, some had been raised and lowered over time, while the fashion now is not to use them at all. I wanted create a pulpit on ground level, to feminise it and to democratise it by allowing a space for anyone to enter.
